Signs That Your Lead Came May Be Failing
Lead came is the channel-shaped metal strip that holds individual panes of glass together in a leaded window. In most American-made windows, came has a functional lifespan of roughly 75 to 100 years, though some panels in favorable conditions last considerably longer. According to the National Park Service’s preservation guidelines, the most reliable indicators of came deterioration include oxidation, visible bowing, and solder joint failure—all of which are detectable during a careful visual inspection.
Start by looking at the surface of the came itself. Healthy lead has a dull, even gray color. When came begins to oxidize, it develops a white or chalky powdery coating in patches. This oxidation weakens the metal’s tensile strength and makes it more brittle, accelerating the risk of cracking at joints. If you can see these white patches on multiple came lines throughout a panel, the came is likely approaching the end of its reliable service life.
Next, look at the overall plane of the panel. A sound leaded glass window sits flat or very nearly flat within its frame. When came softens and loses structural integrity, panels begin to bow, sag, or develop a visible wave across their surface. Even a modest bulge of half an inch or more is a sign that internal stresses are building—left unaddressed, bowing panels can crack glass, open solder joints, and eventually push out of their frames entirely.
Finally, examine the solder joints where came lines meet. These joints should appear smooth, solid, and continuous. Tearing—where the metal appears to be pulling apart at or near a joint—is one of the clearest signs that a panel needs professional attention. You may also see joints that have become visibly raised, sunken, or separated at the edges. Any of these conditions means the structural grid of the window is compromised.
Spotting Loose Glass and Failed Glazing
